Check out this music video created by Megan Landry, a 15-year old student, singer, dancer, writer, and moviemaker. Obviously, the song itself is a beautiful theme song for the anti-bullying, teen self-empowerment movement. But let's take a step back and think not just about the song but about the whole story behind the creation of the song: the story of a really creative young woman and her friends getting together to work on a project that meant something to them, learning to fly the plane as they built it, and ending up with a meaningful product that they've now shared with over 50,000 youtube viewers. What if she had been studying for SATs instead? While I'm not trying to advocate that number-of-YouTube-views complement (or replace) standardized test scores, I can't help but wonder why the average school day doesn't (yet?) foster this kind of learning experience.
