Ashoka’s Start Empathy initiative is selecting and partnering with schools who are leading a transformation in education, such that children grow up prepared to thrive in a world of accelerating change.
Changemaker Schools are leading institutions that prioritize empathy, teamwork, leadership, and changemaking as student outcomes. Through innovations in school curricula, culture, and systems Changemaker Schools are pioneering how education can cultivate children as changemakers — someone with the skill set and connection to purpose that enables them to generate ideas and take initiative in order to effectively solve problems and drive positive change.
Launched in 2012, our Changemaker Schools Network is a diverse community of influential and innovative public, charter, and independent elementary, middle and high schools. The network includes over 260 Changemaker Schools around the globe and 89 in the United States so far.
We don’t just select good or great schools — we select schools that understand that everyone must be a changemaker, are innovating to create that ethos in their own school, and are willing and able to be leaders in influencing the rest of the education system. A visit to these schools offers a glimpse into what Ashoka and its partners see as the future of education. Our world is changing faster than ever and we need our education system to not just keep up, but to lead the charge.
